Social Enterprise

The Community Development team can advise you and your organisation on how to bring in a regular, sustainable income, through the creation of a Social Enterprise.

What is a Social Enterprise?

Social Enterprises are businesses with primarily social objectives. They combine financial sustainability with social and environmental missions.

Their surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.

They have a distinct and valuable role to play in helping create a strong, sustainable and socially inclusive economy.

What sort of things can Voluntary & Community organisations do?

Anything!  - as long as it fits the criteria above.  Social Enterprises come in many forms – social firms, mutuals, co-operatives, fair trade organisations, trading arms of charities, community businesses and private companies limited by guarantee....... whoever you are and whatever your organisation, you can set up a Social Enterprise scheme.

Some local examples include -

  • running a coffee bar

  • a garden centre

  • offering consultancy services

  • running a computer and network support service

What is their benefit?

  • Social Enterprises help to unleash entrepreneurial spirit and encourage communities to help themselves.

  • They often provide training for people who find formal settings difficult to access

  • Show new ways to deliver public services

  • Help drive up productivity competitiveness
